About the initiative

What would you do when one incident burns down the very foundation of your life? Would you run away? Where? How long would you mourn the loss? What would you do next?

On 7th December, 2015, a massive fire broke out in Damu Nagar, a slum in Kandivali, a suburb in North Mumbai, and triggered a series of cylinder explosions. 16 fire engines were rushed to the site. It took them nearly four hours to put out the blaze. But over 35 cylinders had exploded, over 800 homes were burnt, 11 people were injured and 2 lost their lives and over 4000 people lost every piece of belonging that they owned.

Three months later, the survivors of Damu Nagar are still struggling to cope with the loss of their livelihoods and possessions. The future may look bleak, but they are convinced not to let go of what the fire tried to snatch from them. Iamin in association with Bridge and Milaap want your help in getting them back on their feet.

Call it grit, courage or resilience, but Damu Nagar is determined to rise and they have you to count on.
