    ZARIYA - A HELPING HAND

    from Meerut, Uttar Pradesh

While India hits new grim record cases and deaths per day due to Covid-19, healthcare systems are overwhelmed and a shortage of medical oxygen has emerged as the most serious challenge. This acute shortage has impacted the whole nation including National capital and Tier 2 cities like Meerut (3.4 million population) have felt a greater impact with the existing small health infrastructure facing insurmountable demand from within and the neighbouring cities, with 31 hospitals listed down by district administration to serve such a large population.
Hospitals are scrambling for medical supplies as the supply are growing each hour per day and the unit price of those medic aids have skyrocketed. Every day number of deaths are being reported in the Meerut district due to Coronavirus. Mucormycosis (black fungus) is emerging as another hotbed in Meerut now.

Who are we?
We are a group of 30+ volunteers, who have been actively helping the impacted families by mobilizing the available resource leads in the  Meerut city – supply of oxygen cylinders, oxycans, ventilators, bipaps, constantly updating information on bed availability, plasma availability, and the like.
We’ve been doing this for over a month and have first-hand knowledge of the huge demand and supply gap. Below are some of our volunteer representatives –

Priyamvada Goel – Indian School of Business (Alumnus), Founder of Tosa
Utsav Amitendu Agarwal – Senior Consultant at Grant Thornton Bharat LLP
Sumit Nangia - Senior Analyst, Fidelity International
Rajan Sharma - Management Trainee, Airtel Payment Bank
NGO Partner - Zariya ( www.Zariya.co.in)

What is this fundraiser for and how it will be effective?
To this effect, we are raising funds which will be utilised to procure medical support equipment for the hospitals most stressed for supplies to upgrade their serving capabilities. We have set the target to get approximately 30 medical support equipment's by next month for hospital running acute shortage. We anticipate to save more lives in the city and have tight timelines to do it.
The process of distribution of this aid is based on 3 key principles which are –
i) Equitable distribution - Ensuring the areas and institutions most in need receive them.
ii) Transparency - All details on demand and deployment shall be published on the website.
iii) Impact: Distribution to be made as rapidly as possible to save the maximum lives.

What is the cost of procurement of this medical aid?
The equipment shall be a mix of oxygen concentrators, BIPAP machines and oxygen cylinders. Each high flow oxygen concentrator costs Rs. 60,000 (USD 800) and each low flow concentrator costs Rs 45,000 (USD 600), a BIPAP machine costs upto Rs. 90,000 (USD 1200) and the current rate of any oxygen cylinder is Rs. 30,000. Financial auditing will be enabled and share here to track the details of fund.
